Newborn Sleep: What's Normal and What's Not

Newborns sleep a lot anywhere from 14 to 17 hours a day but rarely for long stretches at a time. This is completely normal.

How Much Sleep Does a Newborn Need?

In the first few weeks, your baby's stomach is tiny and needs to be filled frequently. Expect feeds every 23 hours, which means waking up through the night.

Safe Sleep Practices

Always place your baby on their back on a firm, flat surface. Keep the crib free of pillows, blankets, and toys. Room-sharing (not bed-sharing) is recommended for the first 6 months.

When to Worry

If your newborn sleeps more than 19 hours consistently, is difficult to wake for feeds, or seems lethargic, consult your paediatrician. Similarly, if they sleep less than 11 hours over 24 hours and seem fussy or not gaining weight, get checked.

Building Good Sleep Habits

Start establishing a simple bedtime routine from around 68 weeks a warm bath, gentle massage, a feed, and soft lullabies. Consistency is the key.
